I just love that it's called CAVE, is located just down the road from my favorite restaurant in the universe: Diner and is a completely white room. White walls, white marley sprung floor and white curtains. Now if only the walls were padded--we could really get heavy metal mental and take our thrashing to new levels!

Another plus: it always feels like midnight--another key component to Zodiac Dance. No mirrors, no windows, no distractions--just the circle and the music! Body & Psyche collude to delve deeply within.

Con: This is happening during a Mercury Retrograde.

Chances are this will be a temporary albeit cozy new home for the time being!

It’s amazing how emotional stuff stays stifled in the strata of our beings. We carry it around allowing its subtle and subconscious influences to affect our relationships and life choices. Imagine if we could unlock the negative, deep-seated emotions that deprive us of our power, joy, balance, creativity, love, and success? Through the Zodiac Dance Workshop our small, intimate group of women discovered the truth of Martha Graham’s words “The body says what words cannot”.

The workshop was facilitated by Sherene Schostack, M.A., (Jungian psychoanalyst, dancer and metaphysician) who created a nurturing, non-judgmental and supportive environment with group breathing exercises and mantra which helped unify our energies. After explaining how current planetary cycles (the zodiac) affect or trigger certain emotional issues, we brought that awareness into the sacred circle we formed within the candle-lit dance studio with covered mirrors. It was within that circle we took turns surrendering our emotions (both superficial and deep) through dance... pure, authentic, un-choreographed movement. So as Sherene’s iPod sequenced through an unpredictable playlist of everything from rock to R&B, we “spoke” through stillness, stomping, shrieking, flailing, grooving, crying, twirling, floating, laughing, leaping, crawling, wiggling and writhing. We expressed ourselves.

It’s amazing how one’s initial nerves soon give way to complete liberation, freedom and abandonment. Your own authentic movement becomes your bliss and you begin to “dance as though nobody’s is watching”--Mark Twain.

The authentic movement workshops have expanded to include special workshops for drama students and soon I will be collaborating with a wonderful voice coach, Kate Hart to help students access the depths of their true voice.

I recently had a very moving (pun intended) experience in an authentic movement workshop with my magical Gemini artistic partner, Robert Palmer and his drama students at Pace University in New York City. The aim was to assist the students in discovering ways to embody the role of actor as storyteller inspired by Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing" and the famous opening scene with Rosie Perez telling her story through very raw and expressive movement. Honestly we had no idea what to expect. Asking drama students to free-form dance on demand felt like an exciting but risky experiment. The results were phenomenal. Robert is an extraordinary professor as it is, so these students already had amazing groundwork and were very trusting of anything he would endorse. This of course helped tremendously to break the ice. Yet, the before and after transformation was remarkable. Even the most inhibited students broke out of their shells within the first few songs. I believe it is the power of music, creating safe and sacred space, and non-judgmental positive regard also known as love created in the authentic movement circles that facilitates the trust to delve into the core of the body. The letting go and dropping down from the head into the bones allows us to experience what it's like to be danced by the moment, the music, and most importantly the authentic self buried in the cave of the heart.

By the end, even the most rigid bodies, constrained voices, and timid postures seemed to have been cracked open in this process. Faces were glowing, breathing was slow and heavy (okay, of course most of us were trying to catch our breath), voices were deep and resonant and hearts were open. Following the dance, the participants are encouraged to share about their experience in the circle. Robert's students were incredibly honest and bravely vulnerable expressing words about how much the unity in the circle had meant to them and how grateful they were for a chance to work out so much pent up emotion and aggression. There wasn't a dry eye in the room--including the men. The outpouring of love and support both verbally and nonverbally cannot adequately be expressed in the confines of words. I hope to have a copy of the video-clip very soon. Images and actions always speak louder than words. After experiencing the magic that took place during those three soul-stirring hours in the classroom, all I can say is that I believe in the power of love.

"The symbols of the Self arise in the depths of the body"-Jung

My experience with Jungian Authentic Movement started in my Chinatown loft under the name of Kali Dance in 1999. In an attempt to help women unleash their rage, a sacred circle was formed and the invitation was for fearless women let go of all the pent up anger, grief, sadness, guilt , and any other repressed knots draining their life force. What resulted was a volcanic explosion of centuries of rage pouring out of delicate bone structures. I quickly realized, this was tapping into some kind of much needed Primal Scream prescription for women. The "good girl/people pleasing" complexes run deep--and talking just wasn't enough.

Over the past decade the workshops have evolved into Zodiac Dance, based on the connection to the planetary cycles and their influence on our somatic experience. This blog is dedicated to exploring the various archetypal dimensions of psyche/soma that authentic movement continues to reveal through the evolution of the weekly workshop journey.
